The first settler in the area sought refuge in the heights of the tree as wolves and bears roamed the dirt lane and forest that would one day become the city’s downtown. Later\, a platform was built in the large oak’s branches where it is said a sentry\, seeking the faint glow of wolves’ eyes\, would hunt\, eager to protect the village from threats hidden in the darkness below. It is a wild history\, a bold story\, and a great homage to the films that will be featured at this exciting annual event. \n  \n#BeYoungish\, #ChooseMarshall\, and support the arts!

SUMMARY:McClane Fest
DESCRIPTION:The YPC proudly presents “McClane Fest\,” and for a few Bruce Willis strong reasons. First up\, it’s a lay up – Bruce Willis saves Christmas. Second? Equally easy – Alan Rickman’s voice is incredible. And lastly\, to put some holiday sprinkles on top – it’s a great excuse for Youngish to connect\, laugh\, and get into the holiday spirit in whatever fashion fits you best – all the while supporting our great little local theatre! \nKey details… \n– Mingling begins at 8:45 in the Bobar\n– John McClane starts saving Christmas at 9:30\n– We are all nestled snug in our beds by midnight (if you want to be) \nDie Hard movie character and/or holiday attire is strongly encouraged\, and award(s) will be presented to the best dressed Youngish. \nThe YPC also encourages some Bruce Willis strong shopping downtown prior to the event\, to continue checking off those gift lists while supporting our local merchants. So take that fresh John McClane haircut or that late 80s attire you’re wearing for a crisp cruise down the strip\, fill those shopping bags\, and don’t forget to have a yippee ki-yay time while you’re at it. It’s the holidays\, after all

SUMMARY:Opening the Earth: The Potato King (Documentary Screening)
DESCRIPTION:BluFish Consulting and the Michigan Humanities are proud to present\, in partnership with Marshall’s Youngish Professionals Committee (YPC)\, the Midwest Premiere of “Opening the Earth: The Potato King\,” on Saturday\, August 17th\, 2019\, at 7:00 pm. Tickets are $10 and can be purchased in advance through the YPC’s EventBrite page or at the door. Doors open at 6:00 pm for a pre-reception and early seating. \nOpening the Earth: The Potato King is a documentary about Julio Hancco\, a guardian of biodiversity living in the Andes Mountains if Peru. His humble life is contrasted with the global significance of his work. Julio Hancco represents a people\, a culture\, and a way of life that is being lost to modernization. The youth want to leave the farming communities in search of a better life. The documentary follows two young Peruvians on opposite sides of this issue. The result is a documentary that challenges our perception of poverty and celebrates traditional knowledge. Opening the Earth: The Potato King is a visually stunning celebration of the indigenous cultures of the Andes Mountains and what they can teach us in today’s modern society. \nThe documentary was shot over 2 years in the Andes Mountains of Peru and had its world Premiere at the Santa Barbara International Film Festival earlier this year. The film was directed and filmed by award-winning filmmaker Eric Ebner and Co-Founder or the Andean Alliance for Sustainable Development\, Aaron Ebner. Eric and Aaron were born and raised in Marshall and will be joining us for a live Q&A session after the screening. The discussion will cover a range of topics from the creation and experiences of making the film\, to the way the Andean Alliance for Sustainable Development has redefined development through their work in Peru over the last 10 years.

SUMMARY:#TrashTag - A Community Clean-Up Event
DESCRIPTION:Date: Monday\, May 27th \nTime: 10:45 AM – 12:00 PM \nLocation: Dark Horse Staff Parking Lot (on the corner of  West Pearl and South Kalamazoo Street) – Marshall Boardwalk and surrounding area \nDescription: Immediately following the Memorial Day Parade in downtown Marshall\, young(ish) and old are encouraged to meet at the Dark Horse staff parking lot (just south of the compound) for the first community #TrashTag event. A national movement\, #TrashTag encourages people to invest a little elbow grease to clean-up their neighborhoods\, parks\, and/or natural settings\, and to take before and after pictures to share the transformation. \nPlan to arrive at 10:45 AM to check-in and be given your trash picking supplies (i.e.\, gloves and garbage bags). Water and lite snacks will also be provided\, but don’t anticipate any packaging for either (that’s trash\, man!) – so please make sure to bring a reusable water bottle! At 11:00 the trash pick-up blitz will begin\, targeting the Riverwalk and surrounding areas. \n“We really think people will be amazed at how much ground we will be able to cover in only an hour of time\, how much fun it will be\, and how big of an impact we will have\,” shared event co-organizer and “foreman\,”  Josh Servis. “This is a great way to give back to our community\, and to honor those who fought and gave the ultimate sacrifice for our country.” \nOh\, and don’t forget the kick-off to our Fridays at the Fountain concert series on the 24th (7pm). Until then\, #BeYoungish\, #ChooseMarshall\, and if you pick up some trash\, tag it!

SUMMARY:Wolf Tree Film Festival
DESCRIPTION:The YPC and Franke Center of Marshall invites film creators and film lovers alike to join them for the Wolf Tree Film Festival on Saturday\, January 26\, 2019. Taking its name from Marshall legend\, the inaugural event will feature the work of Michigan-based/born filmmakers. Doors will open at 7pm\, for a special craft beer tasting featuring Dark Horse Brewery\, and the “film reels” will start rolling at 8pm. Tickets are $10.00 for general admission and will be available at the door only\, with no advance sales. \nThe lore of Marshall’s Wolf Tree is one of a lone\, prominent tree\, with a stately position in the middle of what is now Mansion Street. Perched high between its large oak branches was a platform\, where it is said a sentry\, seeking the faint glow of eyes – wolves’ eyes – would sit\, eager to protect his village from the threats hidden in the darkness below. The legend continues that the first person to stay in Marshall sought refuge in the heights of this same tree\, as wolves and bears would roam the dirt lanes and forests of what would soon become Downtown Marshall. It is a wild history\, a bold story\, and a great homage to the films that will be featured at this exciting new event. \nWe hope to see you at the Franke. \n#BeYoungish\, #ChooseMarshall\, and support the arts!

SUMMARY:The YPC Annual Update
DESCRIPTION:Update at the Franke Center for the Arts (Lower Level). \nThe event will kickoff with live music\, beverages\, hors d’oeuvres\, and time to network with your fellow Youngish and Marshallites. From there\, the YPC leadership team will button their top buttons\, tighten their ties\, and walk you through a formal update on where we are as an organization\, and where our energy will be directed for our second year as the YPC. We’re excited to share how far we have come\, what we have learned along the way\, and what our vision is for the future. On top of all of that\, we’d love to hear your thoughts on how we can continue to serve our fellow youngish\, and continue to make Marshall the best place possible to live\, work\, and play. Upon completion of our presentation\, we’ll loosen those collars again\, and get back to the mingling. \nPlease note: this is not a formal event (be casual\, be charming)\, all are welcome (youngish and oldish)\, and we appreciate your support! \nAs the event near we’ll continue to roll out more details\, but until then\, please save the date\, be active\, be engaged\, and be Youngish! \nCheers\,\nThe YPC

During the movie\, the theater lights will be dimly lit so attendees can continue to socialize in both the theater and the BoBar\, because that’s what this event series is all about: getting to know your fellow Youngish! \nThe event will start a 7PM with a social in the Bobar\, your beverage of choice\, some snacks\, and music curated by DJ Horsemouth and DJ Wife Liz (fellow Youngish)! After a special YPC and Bogar introduction at 7:30PM\, the movie will start and conversation continue in Theater #2 and at the bar. Lights out at 10PM. \nThe event is open to Youngish 21-45ish years of age\, and a suggested $5 donation is welcomed to cover future mini-social event costs. \nNot a White Russian fan? No worries\, man\, as the full Bobar bar will be open (cash bar)\, in addition to their traditional theater refreshments and snacks for purchase. \nWe hope you respect the carpet\, man\, and are able to join us for a fun night of Youngish networking! We promise you won’t be out of your element. \nThe YPC abides.
