SUMMARY:Happy Hours @ The Franke: John Jorgenson Bluegrass Band
DESCRIPTION:Thursday\, April 4\, 2023 at 6:00 pm\nFranke Center For the Arts (214 E. Mansion St. Marshall\, MI 49068)\n \nJohn Jorgenson is perhaps best known for his guitar work with bands such as the Desert Rose Band and The Hellecasters. Jorgenson is also proficient in the mandolin\, mandocello\, Dobro\, pedal steel\, piano\, upright bass\, clarinet\, bassoon\, and saxophone. Known for his blistering guitar and mandolin licks and mastery of a broad musical palette\, Jorgenson has earned a reputation as a world-class musician\, as evidenced by his collaborations with Earl Scruggs\, Bonnie Raitt\, Elton John\, Luciano Pavarotti\, Bob Dylan and many others. \nFirst coming to national attention in the mid ‘80s as co-founder of successful country-rock act The Desert Rose Band\, an eclectic array of artists such as Bonnie Raitt\, Bob Seger and Barbra were drawn to add Jorgenson’s artistry to their own recordings. While a member of the Desert Rose Band\, Jorgenson won the Academy of Country Music’s “Guitarist of the Year” award two consecutive years. \nIn the ‘90s The Hellecasters gave audiences a chance to experience John’s fretboard fireworks in an unrestrained venue and the trio’s three original albums remain favorites of guitarists everywhere. Having been a fan of the Desert Rose Band\, Elton John invited Jorgenson to join his band in 1994 for an 18 month tour that stretched into a six-year stint of touring\, recording and TV appearances with the British superstar\, in addition to collaborations with other artists including Sting and Billy Joel. \n2010 marked the 100th birthday of the great gypsy guitarist Django Reinhardt. Since discovering Django in 1979\, Jorgenson has become “the US Ambassador of Gypsy Jazz” which is quite an honor given the distinctly European slant of the music’s heritage. Over the years Jorgenson has continued to honor the legacy of Reinhardt by bringing his unique brand of Gypsy Jazz to the masses with his John Jorgenson Quintet. \nJorgenson continues to expand his dynamic range of musical offerings\, exploring new elements of world music\, bluegrass\, rock and classical as he captivates and enlightens fellow musicians and listeners along the way. Touring with multiple musical configurations such as the John Jorgenson Quintet\, the John Jorgenson Electric Band\, the John Jorgenson Bluegrass Band and the Desert Rose Band. Jorgenson annually plays dates across the U.S. and Europe. Each permutation allows him to make prodigious use of his mastery of many instruments; no matter which band Jorgenson is playing with\, his brilliant guitar work leads the way with music that is a combination of groundbreaking playing full of soaring melodies and driving rhythms. \nHis contribution is utterly one of a kind by not only Jorgenson’s skillful guitar playing\, but also his solo clarinet\, bouzouki\, and vocal performances as well. \nLegends like Elton John\, Earl Scruggs and Duane Eddy along with fellow guitarists such as Tommy Emmanuel\, Peter Frampton and Brad Paisley have sung Jorgenson’s praises\, and the best way to find out what they already know is to check out this artist who is leaving a lasting legacy in the art of guitar performance.

SUMMARY:The Skivvies
DESCRIPTION:November 19\, 2022 | 8PM\nSpecial Mainstage Guest: Danae Lortz\, Charlie King & Beau Hutchings\nDOWNSTAGE CLUB PRESHOW: DANAE LORTZ | 7 PM\nThe Skivvies are Nick Cearley and Sydney Shepherd singer/actor/musicians performing stripped-down arrangements of eclectic covers and eccentric originals. Not only is the music stripped down – cello\, ukulele\, glockenspiel\, melodica – but the Skivvies literally strip down to their underwear to perform. The Skivvies were born in 2012 when they became YouTube sensations with their unique covers of artists like Robyn\, Carole King\, and Rihanna. The videos led to live shows\, and now this “musically thrilling”\, undie-rock\, the comedy-pop duo continues to perform to sold-out audiences in New York and beyond. \nThe Wall Street Journal calls them “smart\, sophisticated…ingenious\,” and Out Magazine says\, “The Skivvies have managed to carve out a niche that we never knew needed to exist: part Weird Al- parody and part sexy burlesque…and unusual explosion of satire and sultry.”  People Magazine named The Skivvies “The Most Playful Performers” in The Most Talked about Bodies issue and Sports Illustrated named them “Favorite New Band”.  The New York Times calls them “a hot musical comedy duo specializing in unexpected arrangements\, incongruous mashups\, and of course\, highly toned displays of skin.” They were also nominated for a MAC award for show of the year.

The first settler in the area sought refuge in the heights of the tree as wolves and bears roamed the dirt lane and forest that would one day become the city’s downtown. Later\, a platform was built in the large oak’s branches where it is said a sentry\, seeking the faint glow of wolves’ eyes\, would hunt\, eager to protect the village from threats hidden in the darkness below. It is a wild history\, a bold story\, and a great homage to the films that will be featured at this exciting annual event. \n  \n#BeYoungish\, #ChooseMarshall\, and support the arts!

SUMMARY:Opening the Earth: The Potato King (Documentary Screening)
DESCRIPTION:BluFish Consulting and the Michigan Humanities are proud to present\, in partnership with Marshall’s Youngish Professionals Committee (YPC)\, the Midwest Premiere of “Opening the Earth: The Potato King\,” on Saturday\, August 17th\, 2019\, at 7:00 pm. Tickets are $10 and can be purchased in advance through the YPC’s EventBrite page or at the door. Doors open at 6:00 pm for a pre-reception and early seating. \nOpening the Earth: The Potato King is a documentary about Julio Hancco\, a guardian of biodiversity living in the Andes Mountains if Peru. His humble life is contrasted with the global significance of his work. Julio Hancco represents a people\, a culture\, and a way of life that is being lost to modernization. The youth want to leave the farming communities in search of a better life. The documentary follows two young Peruvians on opposite sides of this issue. The result is a documentary that challenges our perception of poverty and celebrates traditional knowledge. Opening the Earth: The Potato King is a visually stunning celebration of the indigenous cultures of the Andes Mountains and what they can teach us in today’s modern society. \nThe documentary was shot over 2 years in the Andes Mountains of Peru and had its world Premiere at the Santa Barbara International Film Festival earlier this year. The film was directed and filmed by award-winning filmmaker Eric Ebner and Co-Founder or the Andean Alliance for Sustainable Development\, Aaron Ebner. Eric and Aaron were born and raised in Marshall and will be joining us for a live Q&A session after the screening. The discussion will cover a range of topics from the creation and experiences of making the film\, to the way the Andean Alliance for Sustainable Development has redefined development through their work in Peru over the last 10 years.

SUMMARY:#TrashTag - A Community Clean-Up Event
DESCRIPTION:Date: Monday\, May 27th \nTime: 10:45 AM – 12:00 PM \nLocation: Dark Horse Staff Parking Lot (on the corner of  West Pearl and South Kalamazoo Street) – Marshall Boardwalk and surrounding area \nDescription: Immediately following the Memorial Day Parade in downtown Marshall\, young(ish) and old are encouraged to meet at the Dark Horse staff parking lot (just south of the compound) for the first community #TrashTag event. A national movement\, #TrashTag encourages people to invest a little elbow grease to clean-up their neighborhoods\, parks\, and/or natural settings\, and to take before and after pictures to share the transformation. \nPlan to arrive at 10:45 AM to check-in and be given your trash picking supplies (i.e.\, gloves and garbage bags). Water and lite snacks will also be provided\, but don’t anticipate any packaging for either (that’s trash\, man!) – so please make sure to bring a reusable water bottle! At 11:00 the trash pick-up blitz will begin\, targeting the Riverwalk and surrounding areas. \n“We really think people will be amazed at how much ground we will be able to cover in only an hour of time\, how much fun it will be\, and how big of an impact we will have\,” shared event co-organizer and “foreman\,”  Josh Servis. “This is a great way to give back to our community\, and to honor those who fought and gave the ultimate sacrifice for our country.” \nOh\, and don’t forget the kick-off to our Fridays at the Fountain concert series on the 24th (7pm). Until then\, #BeYoungish\, #ChooseMarshall\, and if you pick up some trash\, tag it!

SUMMARY:Wolf Tree Film Festival
DESCRIPTION:The YPC and Franke Center of Marshall invites film creators and film lovers alike to join them for the Wolf Tree Film Festival on Saturday\, January 26\, 2019. Taking its name from Marshall legend\, the inaugural event will feature the work of Michigan-based/born filmmakers. Doors will open at 7pm\, for a special craft beer tasting featuring Dark Horse Brewery\, and the “film reels” will start rolling at 8pm. Tickets are $10.00 for general admission and will be available at the door only\, with no advance sales. \nThe lore of Marshall’s Wolf Tree is one of a lone\, prominent tree\, with a stately position in the middle of what is now Mansion Street. Perched high between its large oak branches was a platform\, where it is said a sentry\, seeking the faint glow of eyes – wolves’ eyes – would sit\, eager to protect his village from the threats hidden in the darkness below. The legend continues that the first person to stay in Marshall sought refuge in the heights of this same tree\, as wolves and bears would roam the dirt lanes and forests of what would soon become Downtown Marshall. It is a wild history\, a bold story\, and a great homage to the films that will be featured at this exciting new event. \nWe hope to see you at the Franke. \n#BeYoungish\, #ChooseMarshall\, and support the arts!
