Boogie Bob & Chuck Berry

Directed by Geri Alumit Zeldes

This documentary dives into the remarkable career of Bob Baldori, known as “Boogie Bob” by his peers. Both a musician and attorney, Baldori was a member of the band “The Woolies” and toured with Chuck Berry, the Father of Rock n Roll.

Madina

Directed by Kevin Coval

Madina is an unconventional love story of connection and self actualization, as Madina takes a leap into who she always hoped to be, a writer of culture.

Not Him

When her husband turns strange and violent, a wife becomes convinced he is possessed. But will anyone believe her?

A former soap opera actor contends with his father, an assisted living resident with alcoholic dementia, and reflects on his earlier relationship with him.

Sydney G. James: How We See Us

Directed by Juanita Anderson

Visual artist/muralist, Sydney G. James, addresses the status of Black women in society, police brutality, family and community through bold brushstrokes and hues that evoke the complexities of Black reality, joy, pain, and resilience. Inspired by personal experiences, current events and her hometown of Detroit, she invites conversations with family members and fellow artists as she creates a new work on canvas and transforms vacant walls into creative spaces.

The Devil Wants a Promotion

The devil is sick of his life in hell so he comes to the surface to try and be an angel once more.

J.C. came to America as an illegal immigrant when he was just a child. Now, as an adult, he’s still an illegal alien but has managed to persevere and prosper working as a rodeo clown. However, after a series of unfortunate events, J.C. finds himself down on his luck and in search for a new happiness.

What If

Perpetual Plastic

🏆 Wolf Tree Best Documentary Award Winner (Perpetual Plastic, 2022) and Marshall local, Eric Ebner, has gone on to win awards at various film festivals including the first prize at the National Geographic Ocean Plastic Innovation Challenge. He’s also directed other amazing films such as The Bull, Nuestros Muertos, Opening The Earth: The Potato King and more.

The Franke Center for the Arts is gearing up again for the popular community event, The Wolf Tree Film Festival (The Youngish Professionals Committee). The submission site, FilmFreeway.com, is now open for entries.

Everyone is welcome to attend, including cinema fans as well as industry professionals. The Wolf Tree Film Festival is in its 6th year and is set for January 20, 2024 at 7:30pm ET. The festival will once again showcase short films (under 30 minutes) set in the Great Lakes region or that include themes or topics related to the region, as well as the work of filmmakers who reside in or grew up in the Great Lakes region.

This year’s event will again include screenings of each selected film, a meet and greet with the filmmakers and an awards presentation. Selected films will include a variety of genres, including comedy, drama, documentary and others.

Submissions can be submitted at the button below. Deadline for the submissions is November 12th.

2023 Wolf Tree Film Festival

In its fifth year, Wolf Tree Film Festival showcases films set in the Great Lakes region or that include themes or topics related to the region, as well as the work of filmmakers who reside in or grew up in the Great Lakes region. The Great Lakes region is defined as any state or territory that touches one of the Great Lakes (including Ontario, Wisconsin, Minnesota, Michigan, Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, Pennsylvania and New York).

Submitted films should be no longer than 30 minutes, and all genres will be considered.

The festival will take place at The Franke Center for the Arts in Marshall, MI* and will include screenings of each selected film, a Q&A with select filmmakers, an awards presentation, and a filmmaker roundtable with industry professionals.

The Wolf Tree Film Festival is housed in historic Marshall, Michigan, a gorgeous small town with a vibrant artistic community. Hosted by the Franke Center for the Arts and Marshall’s Youngish Professionals Committee, the festival is held at Franke Center, originally a church built in 1921, now an arts complex that is the proud home of world-class concerts, inspiring theater, and award-winning movies.
